Quick verdict
Which app should you use?
There is no single "best" app for every Canadian hunter. It depends on what you hunt, where, and what you already carry in the field.
iHunter
Widely considered the Canadian specialist: highly detailed provincial layers, Crown land and WMU breakdowns, billed per province at roughly $10–15 CAD each. But here's the thing: TrueNorthHunter's free tier already includes zone maps, Crown land layers, offline maps and the harvest log for all nine provinces at $0. What iHunter actually adds on top is its landowner parcel layers.
HuntScout
Canada Pro at $29.99 CAD covers all 9 provinces with Crown land policy, parcel mapping and offline GPS: the least expensive nationwide option. No cited regulations, no movement forecasts, no harvest log or community.
onX Hunt / HuntStand
Both are excellent North America-wide mappers: but Canadian coverage sits behind their top tiers: onX requires Elite at $99.99 USD (~$135 CAD)/yr, and HuntStand Pro is $34.99 USD (~$48 CAD)/yr. Neither carries Canadian seasons or bag limits.
Spartan Forge
Pairs North America-wide mapping with AI-driven movement predictions for $79.99 USD (~$110 CAD)/yr. The predictions are its headline feature: but there are no Canadian regulation data, no harvest log with analytics, and no community.
TrueNorthHunter ✦
The only app that tells you where you can hunt and whether you're legal to take that shot: cited zone regulations for 9 provinces, an AI assistant that answers on the spot, even offline, waterfowl proximity and migration heat-maps, deer and upland forecasts, harvest analytics, community, GPS navigation with route recording so you never lose your bearings in thick forest, and emergency tools built for Canada's out-of-coverage bush. Free core tier; Pro $5.99/mo or $33.99/yr CAD.

The honest part
Where competitors beat us
We're not going to pretend we win every category:
onX Hunt has better maps
Their satellite imagery, 3D terrain and layer polish are the best in the business, and offline performance is excellent. If you spend your season behind a screen studying terrain, and you also hunt in the US, where the Elite price pays for itself, onX is superb at it. You just won't find Canadian seasons, bag limits or zone rules inside it.
iHunter is the Canadian mapping gold standard
Their provincial layers, Crown land detail and WMU breakdowns are the most specialized Canadian map data available, and their landowner layers answer "who owns this quarter section?" better than we currently do: that's a paid capability we don't have. But our zone maps, Crown land layers, offline maps and harvest log are free, so iHunter is only worth paying for if you need those landowner parcels.
HuntScout is the cheapest way to cover all of Canada
At $29.99 CAD for nine provinces of Crown land and parcel mapping, HuntScout beats us on raw map-price-per-province. If mapping is your entire use case, that's a fair pick.
Spartan Forge leans harder into AI predictions
Their AI movement prediction is their whole identity, and they've been at it longer. If you want a mapping app with predictive layers and don't mind ~$110 CAD/yr or the absence of Canadian regulation data, it's a serious tool.
Why switch
How you're better off with TrueNorthHunter
1. One Canadian price, every province
iHunter's per-province fees multiply fast: two or three provinces a year and you're already paying TrueNorthHunter's $33.99 CAD: for maps alone. onX wants $99.99 USD (~$135 CAD) for Canada. We charge one CAD price that covers regulations, zones, forecasts, logging and community in all 9 provinces.
2. Every regulation is cited to the official guide
Our 9-province regulation data is transcribed from the current official provincial guides: zone by zone, species by species, with the page citation on every rule. Mapping apps don't carry this data at all; even most Canadian apps stop at summary level.
3. The AI assistant answers "can I hunt here, right now?"
Point at a spot and ask. The assistant reads your current zone, the species, the weapon and today's date against the cited rules, including "am I legal to take this shot, right here, right now?", and it works offline, deep in the bush where you need the answer most. Spartan Forge predicts movement; nobody else answers the legality question.
4. Forecasts built for Canadian species and seasons
Bird proximity and migration heat-maps show where the waterfowl actually are, plus deer movement and upland forecasts tuned to Canadian zones and weather, not a US model stretched over the border. Combined with your own harvest analytics, you learn what actually works on your ground.
5. Emergency tools built for Canada's dead zones
Much of the best hunting in this country has no cell signal, and thick forest makes it dangerously easy to lose orientation. GPS navigation with record-your-route breadcrumbs traces your path in and guides you back out, while SOS strobe, one-tap 911, violation reporting, offline maps and offline AI answers keep working when you're out of network coverage, not as an afterthought.
6. It's free to start
The free tier includes zone maps, regulations lookup and core tools. Upgrade only when you want forecasts, the AI assistant and analytics: with a free trial before you pay a cent.
The annual math (per year, for Canadian hunting)
A mapping app alone still leaves you googling season dates and keeping your log in a notes app. One app that knows your zone, your rules, your log and your forecast, for less than any US-based competitor's Canadian tier, is the better deal.
FAQ
Common questions
Is TrueNorthHunter cheaper than the other apps?
For all-Canada coverage, yes. HuntScout is a few dollars cheaper but is mapping-only. iHunter is cheaper for a single province (~$10–15 CAD) but scales per province, so it passes our $33.99 CAD all-in price at two or three provinces. onX requires its $99.99 USD Elite tier for Canada, and Spartan Forge runs $79.99 USD: roughly triple and double our price respectively.
Should I delete iHunter if I switch?
Not necessarily. If you rely on iHunter's specialized provincial layers or landowner maps in Alberta, Saskatchewan or BC, keep that province's subscription: it's a capability we don't have yet. Many hunters run iHunter's land layer alongside TrueNorthHunter for rules, forecasts and logging.
Do the US apps work in Canada?
They open and their GPS maps function, but Canadian coverage sits behind their top tiers, onX requires Elite ($99.99 USD/yr) for Canada, and none of them carry provincial Canadian seasons, bag limits or regulations. They're ideal only if you split your season between Canada and the US.
What does TrueNorthHunter's free tier include?
Zone maps, current-zone detection, regulations lookup for your province, and core tools like saved pins. Pro adds movement forecasts, the AI assistant, analytics, offline AI and community features, with a free trial.
Do you make a fishing app too?
Yes: TrueNorthAngler, our sister app for Canadian anglers, covers fishing regulations, species guides and forecasts with a large Canadian community already using it. If you fish between hunts, check it out here.
Are these prices guaranteed?
No. We verified them in September 2026 against each vendor's official pricing pages; app pricing changes often, and USD/CAD equivalents move with the exchange rate. Check the App Store or Google Play listing before subscribing.
